When I received the June,2000, issue of ByLine, several familiar names popped up. I am delighted to share with you news of some poets whose work I respect. They are active in both print and Net media.
Ms. Damerell's chapbook, What We Save, is an Award of Merit winner in ByLine's Third Annual Chapbook competition. According to the magazine's announcement, "This year's competition drew nearly two hundred manuscripts written by poets from across the nation and overseas." The competition was judged by poet and author Diane Glancy. Ms. Glancy is an associate professor at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is the author of five books, and her newest collection, The Relief of America, was published this spring by Tia Chucha Press. Ms. Glancy cited Ms. Damerell's manuscript for special recognition. Ms. Damerell's poetry has appeared in a number of literary publications. Her poetry appeared in the March, 2000 issue of ByLine, and she won a contest at Miller's Pond. Her work is also featured in Stagger, Sijo Blossoms,Mentress Moon, La Petite Zine, and Moveo Angelus. Ms. Damerell is moderator of the Sistine Chapbook Poetry Board at Moveo Angelus. She is familiar to many of us on the Net for her polite, careful critiques and her tireless efforts on behalf of budding writers, and poetry in general. Kudos to Julie for her success! Ruth Daigon Ms. Daigon needs no introduction because of her prolific contributions to both print and online media. Her chapbook, Sweating Honey, is an Award of Merit winner in the ByLine Third Annual Chapbook Competition. Ms. Daigon was featured here at Poetry@suite101.com in the article, Ruth Daigon Makes Poetry Sing. She is a past winner of the Ann Stanford Poetry Prize. Recently, Ms. Daigon was chosen from a nationwide selection of poets to participate in the Pudding House Gold Series featuring her all-time greatest hits representing the span of her career to date. Jennifer Bosvelt, editor, states "This series constitutes poets whose work has been well-published and used and referred to and remembered, quoted bac, and/or poems that have been requested time and time again at readings or for anthologies... This is going to be BIG... they will have reached a level of recognition and respect before invited in to this project." We congratulate Ms. Daigon for her contributions to poetry! Shoshauna Shy Shoshauna Shy's poem, The Poem I Refuse to Write, graces the pages of ByLine's, "The Poetic Life," column written and edited by Sandi Soli, who judged our recent Funny Poem contest here at Poetry@suite101.com.
