Outstanding Performers and Songs in 1963 Pop Music


was a no. 1 smash in late June ("Two girls for every boy!"). "Honolulu Lulu" was a no. 11 hit in late Sept., and "Drag City" was a no. 10 smash in late Dec.

The Kingston Trio's
"Greenback Dollar" made no. 21 in late Feb. (the same position as their previous hit, 1962's "Where Have All The Flowers Gone"). "Reverend Mr. Black" returned the group to the top ten (since their no. 1 1958 smash "Tom Dooley") at no. 8 in late April. "Desert Pete" was their last top 40 hit (no. 33 on Aug. 31st).

Major Lance
took "The Monkey Time" to no 8 in Aug. and started a new dance craze (The Miracles' "Mickey's Monkey" also made no. 8 on Aug. 31st!). Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced Lance's hit. The follow-up, "Hey Little Girl" made no. 13 in early Nov.

Phil Spector
session singer (bet you can't say this real fast!) Darlene Love (real name: Darlene Wright) had two top 40 hits: "(Today I Met)The Boy I'm Gonna Marry" (no. 39 in May) and "Wait Til' My Bobby Gets Home" (no. 26 in late Aug.).

Little Peggy March
had a no. 1 smash, "I Will Follow Him" in April. "I Wish I Were A Princess" (don't you just love this title?) made no. 32 in very late June, and "Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love" peaked at no. 26 in late Sept.

"I Love You Because" was a no. 3 smash for Al Martino in early May. "Painted, Tainted Rose" peaked at no. 15 in mid-Aug., and "Living A Lie" made no. 22 in mid-Nov.

Garnet Mims and The Enchanters took "Cry Baby" to no. 4 in Sept. They also had a double-sided top 40 hit, "For Your Precious Love" (no. 26 in Dec.)/ backed by "Baby Don't You Weep" (no. 30, also in Dec).

Ricky Nelson
had a no. 25 hit, "String Along" in mid-June, and the classic "Fools Rush In" (no. 12 in Oct).
