Traditionally most people decorate their homes after Thanksgiving. Some people may find it hard to choose a decorating theme, but this is rarely true for gardeners.
You can also buy tree ornaments featuring fruits, tree leaves, watering cans, and flowers. Some are even shaped like miniature terrariums or greenhouses. There's no need to settle for ordinary Christmas tree lights either when the John Deere sets are available. Fruits are used in so many kinds of decorations. They show up in numerous wall plaques. Some of these depict topiaries, wreaths, and decorated Christmas trees. One indoor-outdoor item from Carruth Studios shows mice scampering around a stylized Christmas tree with the words "Tis the season." If you're tired of the same holiday look year after year, it's time to check out Nell Hill's Christmas at Home by home decor expert Mary Carol Garrity, published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. Customers come from all over the country to visit her home furnishings stores in Atchison, Kansas. She takes everyday items in the home and turns them into holiday treasures. She fills a wall sconce with red fruit and pine cones, and a bird nest with a red pear. A hanging glass votive is filled with cranberries and a pine branch. These are only some of the exquisite decorations using fruits. Why not make your own pomanders from oranges or other citrus? Generally these need to dry for a couple weeks after you add the spices. Create your own grape vine wreath. Normally grape vines aren't pruned this time of year. But for this project it's ok. If you don't have enough pieces of vine, braid some shorter ones together for this project. Other items can be made of fruits. Apples, cranberries, and other fruits make stunning kissing balls. To make a simple lemon topiary start with a wedge of styrofoam. Attach the lemons with floral picks. Then decorate the spaces between with flowers or other fruits. Craft outlets should have dried fruits and preserved whole fruits that are suitable for decorations. Don't confuse these with the dried ones that you eat. They're totally different. Dried fruits are perfectly suitable for making wreaths.
