Here's the some additional details for panels sessions and comic creators for MegaCon 2003 that took place February 28 through March 2, 2003 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida
More on the Future Comics panel with Ron Lim, Dick Giordano, and Bob Layton. Again, Future Comics will only be creating four monthly comics. This is the plan for the complete line. The first three titles are Freemind, Metallix, and Deathmask with a four title thus far unannounced due out in August. My Opinion is that like CrossGen, Future has gotten away from the "Superhero" mold. Unlike CrossGen, they have opted for science to be the basis of their stories instead of all powerful, godlike beings that grant sigils. The science is the science of ten to fifty years from now - what could be possible. Freemind is the story of a wheelchair-bound man who temporarily transfers his mind to a robot. The man is obviously based on famous physicist Dr. Stephen Hawkins. Metallix is a group of troubleshooters who work for a corporation and all share one reprogrammable liquid-metal suit. Deathmask is the story of a vigilante with high technology gear. The story of the fourth title is under wraps at the current time. Bob Layton will be writing the fourth title (Dave Michelinie writes the other three titles.). A trade paperback of Freemind is already being planned. (See last week's articles for possible movie and TV deals.) Bob Layton says "The stories are about characters, not costumes and cool names" and went on to say how he had been working with Dave Michelinie a very long time and that they share the same philosophy. "You have to create a ride to have a good story, and the people will come to it". Future comics gave away free copies of the Metallix #1 comic. They explained that they gave away over 3000 copies of this book at the Mid-Ohio comic book Convention in February 2003. They want you to read it, and if you like it, you will back. Layton says, "We want to create comics the way we remember them to be. " Giordano added, "We produce comics, we have fun reading (them). Plot comes out of character, that's what we try to do. I call them people stories. That's what I like to do. " Here are some amazing business deals that are worth repeating and giving some background information. The initial business plan was to go direct distribution. This means that you call retailers directly and try to get them to order from you. Future offered free shipping if retailers ordered over a certain numbers of books and ordered all of the titles. This includes international shipping, as amazing as it seems.
