Sunscreen and Repellent in One!!

Bug bites. Sunburn. Ahh, the joys of Summer. Filled with fond memories of wrestling children to the ground with a can of OFF!® in one hand and a bottle of Coppertone® in the other, the excitement of going to the public pool seems more dreary every year. Finally both companies now have products that parents have been dreaming about for years, sun tan lotion/insect repellent combos that cut time while protecting our kids.

Coppertone® Bugs and Sun Kids SPF 30

This lotion does a great job of keeping away both burn and bugs. It repels several types of insects, from ticks to mosquitoes, is hypo allergenic and has a moisturizing component. The price hovers at $6 but consumers say the money is worth it.

"I have sensitive skin. I am allergic to many different skin products. I like the fact that this product is hypo allergenic. No problems with rashes even when applied to my sensitive face." said one mother. Others commented on the convenience of being able to use one product for both adults and children, although there is a product just for adults with an SPF 15.

One complaint made was by a mother in an area dense with mosquitoes. In an intense population, the insect repellent just didn't work. For people in situations like these a stronger repellent, such as OFF!® Skintastic Insect Repellent with Sunscreen would be more appropriate.

OFF!® Skintastic Insect Repellent with Sunscreen

Once again, both aspects of this product pass with flying colors. Less expensive than Coppertone's® hybrid lotion, it rounds in at the $3 range. It lacks the hypo allergenic and moisturizing components and has one drawback that many parents think twice about. Off!® Skintastic Insect Repellent with Sunscreen contains DEET.

This is a very good opinion of one mother who chose this product over Coppertone's® due to the local insect problem. http://www.epinions.com/well-review-176E... It offers excellent information concerning the affect DEET has had on children.

Recently the EPA reexamined the statements they'd made about DEET and use with children. The agency came to the conclusion that if used sparingly and according to directions products containing DEET could be safely used on children. Among the most important instructions are never let a child apply the product themselves, do not apply to hands or near eyes or mouth, and always wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water at end of use or before reapplying the product.

Children often balk at applying smelly lotions to play in the sun, but the threat of bug bites helps them understand that repellents are necessities. Combining sunscreen and repellent helps protect our children and gets them used to caring for their skin. While Coppertone's® Bug and Sun Kids SPF 30 is safe and usually effective, OFF!'s® Skintastic Insect Repellent and Sunscreen is a good alternative in overly buggy areas.
