John Masterson - A Scarlet Peccadillo

A Scarlet Peccadillo is John Masterson's first book. While it is classified as a Vampire novel, it is like no other vampire novel that I have read, maybe like no other novel that I have ever read.

INTERVIEW

Tell us about yourself? Your background?
I was born with cerebral palsy and run around in an electric wheelchair. I got a B.A. in English from Wayne State University in Detroit, and with nothing else to do, California pulled me to her.

What else have you written? Is it available on the Web? Where?
Sirius is looking over a Sci-Fi novel. I'm trying to get a mystery novel ready.

Do you have a website?
No, except the one at Sirius. http://www.sirius-books.com/scarlet.html

Where did you come up with the idea of Scarlet Peccadillos?
I grew up on the border of Pennsylvania and Ohio. I always considered it a dark place. Lots of woods. Rumors of green men without noses who had run afoul of high tension lines. Wild girl motorcycle gangs who rode the back roads at night searching for men to castrate. Much later, I heard of strange rural Indiana sex rituals. Satanists who go to A.A. Real or legend, I wanted to write about them.

Is Lulu modeled after an actual person or persons?
I had a roommate from Indiana who used to tell me hair-raising stories. She was a kindergarten teacher with tons of awards, and when she came home she let her hair down like most teachers do-well, maybe not as much as my roommate did. I found that very interesting.

Any other comments?
Read the book, you'll like it.

The Scarlet Peccadillo is a story of madness and insanity portrayed from the inside where everything actually seems normal and sane. The book starts with Louisiana's abusive mother, Stelma, burying Louisiana's pet gold fish in a flower pot as a punishment and quickly escalates into a savage beating with a old fashioned carpet beater, a family heirloom which Stelma's mother used to beat her everyday.

Louisiana, Lulu, finds comfort in biting herself and sucking the blood. It gives her a sense of peace and of control, even power. I found it difficult to relate to that idea, but I know some people do experience that need or hunger.

Lulu's mother was raised by an abusive mother and knows no other way but to take out her emotions on her daughter. She hates her daughter and it becomes a contest of wills between the two of them, a true love/hate relationship. It is an insane household,
