While democracy slowly takes form in some countries, regional insecurity remains a reality in many areas of Africa. Despite the arduous task of altering the fate of its people, the African Union, United Nations and many donor organizations have accepted the responsibility of building a better future for the continent.

An old West African proverb says "it takes a village to raise a child." In the 21st century, it will require the efforts of an educated global village to work together for Africa's children to be delivered from the devastating effects of war, poverty and disease.

With 54 countries, over 1,000 languages and nearly 800 million people, each week will provide a shifting focus and snapshots of life in this diverse continent.
