Not only did South African director Gavin Hood's riveting 2005 film Tsotsi win an Academy Award for best foreign film - and never was an award more well-deserved - but it ushered in a renaissance of film-making in the country and indeed, the continent. And gave the world a small taste of the power and variety of stories to be told by African films. African cinema is diverse, as illustrated by the celebrated 2009 science-fiction film Project 9. And it has its own sub-genres - as anyone familiar with the films of Nollywood knows. The Gods Must Be Crazy might still be the best known African film, but was only a small taste of this continent's rich cinematic culture.
